Chapter 18

Moses sat in his car watching the back door of the Zmaj from a lot a few hundred feet away. It was Christmas Eve day, shortly after noon, and there had been very little activity. The cleaning crew had left an hour ago and since then the place had been quiet. He opened the center console, located a small black sleeve the size of a reporter’s notebook and a small flashlight, and stuffed them in his coat pocket. He left the engine running and got out. He zipped the cowl of his coat over his mouth and pulled on a gray stocking hat as he made his way down the snowy bank to the backdoor of the Zmaj.

A quick glance left and right and he tried the door. Locked. He knelt down, removing the black sleeve from his pocket and unfolding it on the icy asphalt of the lot. He pulled off his gloves and selected two tools from their plastic sheathes.

He inserted the first small metal tool and pulled the tip across the top of the lock, setting the tumblers. He inserted the other L-shaped tool and turned it slightly to put tension on the lock. His fingertips were beginning to numb from the cold breeze as he inserted the first tool again. This was the rake that he had the most success with and he hoped it would work quickly. He rocked the pick up and down, starting with the tumbler furthest from him and working his way out. The tumblers gave way and the tension wrench spun the bolt open. He put the tools away, stashed them back in his pocket, and slipped inside. He quietly closed the door and paused a moment while his eyes adjusted to the dim corridor. No alarms sounded and no one came rushing into the hallway to find him. So far, so good. He took his flashlight from his coat pocket and flicked it on. He focused the beam on the floor as he made his way deeper into the bar. The door to the room where he’d drank the strange liquor with Vahid and Majka was closed. He ignored it for now and continued into the main bar to make sure he was alone.

The place seemed closed up. The bar was reset and restocked, the glasses stacked neatly on the counter. Moses walked to the front window and looked out. Checking the parking lot and seeing nothing, he returned to the office in the back. He tried the door. Locked. He bent down and looked. It was a simple lock. He pulled out his tool set again and this time selected a thin metal card in the shape of a credit card. Moses pulled hard on the knob creating space between the frame and the door, slid the card between the catch, and the door sprang open. He flipped the light on.

Inside, the room was very much the way he had seen it the last time he was there. A deck of cards was stacked next to a half-full ashtray.
